from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the 2006 AATOD Conference. All conference
attendees are invited to the meeting, which is being held at the
Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina.

The Welcome Reception for the 2006 AATOD Conference will be on Sunday,
October 21, 2007 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. The Welcome Reception affords

and colleagues not seen for too long.

Please
join us for the centerpiece of our Conference, a moving tribute
to those individuals, who have been nominated and selected by their
peers for extraordinary service in the opioid treatment community.
These successful Award recipients have devoted themselves to improving
the lives of patients in our treatment system. Dr. Vincent Dole
and Dr. Marie Nyswander were the first recipients of this Award
in 1983. The Association has been responsible for bestowing this
honor since the first Regional Conference of 1984 in New York .
We are honored that the Nyswander / Dole Marie Awards
will be presented by the children of Dr. Vincent Dole, Vincent Dole
III, Susan Dole and Bruce Dole.
The
2007 American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence
National Conference recognizes outstanding contributions to methadone
treatment by rewarding the Nyswander/Dole Award to the following
individuals:
Daniel
Alford, MD
Massachusetts
Dr. Daniel Peter Alford is an Associate Professor of Medicine at
Boston University School of Medicine and Associate Medical Director
of the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Division with the
Boston Public Health Commission. Dr. Alford has worked to expand
opioid agonist treatment to primary care settings and developed
guidelines for general healthcare providers for managing pain with
methadone maintenance patients. He is considered the go to
expert by the Department of Public Health and Bureau of Substance
Abuse Services for policy development and best practices for opioid
treatment.
Herbert
Barish, MSW
New York
Herbert Barish is the CEO of the Lower Eastside Service Center and
currently the President of C.O.M.P.A. Mr. Barish has spent over
40 years working to improve the quality of services offered to chemically
dependent and mentally ill individuals. He has developed innovative
and effective models of treatment including residential services
for pregnant woman, intensive outpatient treatment models, and unique
services for new immigrants. Mr. Barish was also involved in the
initial development of methadone maintenance treatment in New York
City .
Eric
P. Ennis, LCSW
Colorado
Eric Ennis is the Director of Outpatient Services, Addiction Research
and Treatment Services at the University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center. Mr. Ennis was instrumental in the planning and implementation
of extended services being made available to opioid dependent patients
in Denver subsequently expanding access in Colorado . Further, he
was a field reviewer for TIP #43 and on CSATs field review
team for the Community Education Kit. Mr. Ennis was also responsible
for the research and implementation of buprenorphine treatment being
made available in Denver .
Emilia
Figueroa, MD
Mexico
Dr. Emilia Figueroa is the General Director of 12 methadone programs
in Mexico and has been a tireless pioneer for methadone treatment
in Mexico . She has relentlessly pursued research opportunities
that have often led to improved treatment for drug addicted patients
in Mexico . She treats her patients with compassion and professionalism
that serves as an example for those around her. Dr. Figueroa has
championed the notion that addicts must be provided with effective
treatment before the destruction of the social fabric is so complete
that alternatives will not exist.
Alexander
Kantchelov, MD
Bulgaria
Dr. Alexander Kantchelov is the Director of Kantchelov Clinic Sofia,
President of the Bulgarian Methadone Treatment Association, and
the President of Europad Bulgaria . Since 1993 his professional
career has focused on working in the addiction treatment field.
In 1995 he was the Medical Director of the first methadone program
in Bulgaria . For the past 6 years, he has dedicated his professional
life to extending methadone treatment in Bulgaria . He has also
developed the National Training Program and Specialized Course for
methadone
treatment professionals.
Mark
Kleinman, PhD
Florida
Dr. Marc Kleinman is the Regional Administrator/Clinical Director
for Operation PAR. He is on the Advisory Board and Board of Directors
of MethadoneSupport.Org and is responsible for the link entitled
Ask Dr. Marc which provides factual and supportive information
about methadone treatment. He has been instrumental in establishing
Methadone Anonymous groups throughout Florida . He is a member of
the Addiction Consult Team for Hospice in South Florida and provides
regular training to law enforcement and child protective services
investigators.
Rebecca
Lira, BA
California
Rebecca Lira is the Deputy Director of Licensing and Certification
for the California State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs.
She has dedicated 28 years of service to improved quality of care
to addicted individuals while fostering an energetic, collaborative
relationship between the State and treatment providers. She worked
to develop pilot programs for office based treatment and mainstream
health care/addiction treatment under one roof. She also led efforts
to establish counselor certification.
Nora
Quiason, MD
Missouri
Dr.
Nora Quiason is the Medical Director of Paseo Comprehensive Rehabilitation
Clinic and Medical Director of Samuel
U. Rodgers Community Health Center Treatment Intervention Center.
Dr. Quiason has been a tireless advocate for patients right
to treatment with judges, parole/probation officers, and fellow
physicians. She was a leader in the Mid-West to begin testing patients
for Hepatitis. As a faculty member at the University of Missouri-Kansas
City School of Medicine, she ensures critical instruction and mentoring
to medical students providing an important introduction to addiction
medicine.
Julia
Shi, MD
Connecticut
Dr.
Julia Shi is the Medical Director of the Central Medical Unit of
the APT Foundation and a faculty member of Yale University School
of Medicine. Dr. Shi was instrumental in developing the Central
Medical Unit program into a laboratory for innovative
research including studies examining innovative new strategies for
ambulatory opioid detoxification and office based treatment with
buprenorphine. She has been a key individual in a highly respected
and recognized program designed to provide improved access of health
care for individuals with substance use disorders.
Craig
V. Showalter, MD
Illinois
Dr.
Craig Showalter is the Medical Director of the New Age Services
Corporation and Addiction Medical Consultant to Specialized Assistance
Services. In Dr. Showalters 32 years of service he was involved
in early research in the field of opioid dependence, has been a
tireless advocate for patients on probation/parole, involved in
child custody issues, as well as with patients primary care physicians
and the patients families. He championed the cause of adequate
dosing even when it was an unpopular concept. He has published numerous
articles about opioid dependence and its treatment.
George
Stavros, MD
Arizona
Dr.
George Stavros is the Medical Director of the Salt River Health
Clinic and Detoxification Center . He is the Co-Chairman of the
Arizona Methadone Coalition and was the co-founder of the Community
Organization for Drug Abuse Control. Dr. Stavros also serves as
a lecturer, trainer, and consultant to the FAA on drugs/alcohol
and the dangers of flying while impaired. In over 30 years of service,
Dr. Stavros started one of the first methadone clinics in Arizona
in the late 60s and has continued to be an exhaustive proponent
of methadone
treatment for the citizens of Arizona .
Ellen
M. Weber, JD
Maryland
Ellen
Weber is an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Maryland
School of Law and Founder of the Drug Policy and Public Health Strategies
Practice. She previously worked for the Legal Action Center for
17 years. Ms. Weber has challenged the discriminatory zoning laws
throughout the State of Maryland and specifically Baltimore City
that attempted to target substance abuse programs.
She has advocated for the rights of medication assisted patients
to be medicated while incarcerated, to have commercial drivers licenses,
and to address NIMBY practices.
FRIEND
OF THE FIELD AWARD
The
prestigious Friend of the Field Award was established by the American
Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, Inc. Board of
Directors. This award recognizes extraordinary contributions to
the field of methadone treatment by an individual or institution
whose work, although not directly related to methadone treatment,
has had a significant impact on our field. The 2007 Friend of the
Field Award has been awarded to:
Karen
Freeman-Wilson
Indiana
Karen
Freeman-Wilson was formerly the Chief Executive Officer of the National
Association of Drug Court Professionals and the Executive Director
of the National Drug Court Institute in Alexandria , Virginia .
Mrs. Freeman-Wilson has worked closely with representatives from
the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, the Department
of Justice, the Substance Abuse Health Services Administration,
the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, the United
States Drug Czar and other federal officials in the effort to combat
alcohol and other drug abuse. She has overseen the publication of
an unprecedented number of publications on drug policy. As a judge,
she started the first full-fledged drug court in Indiana in September
1996 and to date, hundreds of individuals have benefited from this
program in the City of Gary, Indiana.
RICHARD
LANE PATIENT ADVOCACY AWARD
Richard
Lane was a long-term heroin user who, upon release from prison in
1967, was instrumental in establishing one of the Nations
first methadone treatment programs. In 1974, he became the Executive
Director of Man Alive and later served as Vice President of the
American Methadone Treatment Association and as Vice Chairman of
the Governors Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse in Maryland.
Mr. Lane was a passionate advocate for methadone treatment and,
by disclosing his own treatment experiences, provided inspiration
to patients and colleagues alike. This award was established in
1995 and recognizes extraordinary achievements in patient advocacy.
Anthony
Scro
New
York
Anthony
Scro began his career in 1973 as a counselor at Long Island Jewish
Hospital Methadone Clinic. Mr. Scro is a National Grievance Coordinator,
member of the Board of Directors for AFIRM, Co-Founder of the Association
of Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment, Co-Founder and President
of the Advocates for Addiction Treatment and Education. In addition,
Mr. Scro has worked as a Methadone Treatment Program Director, former
NAMA Board Member, held numerous positions at the New York State
Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Service and founded the
newsletter, The Mouthpiece, which gave patients an opportunity to
voice their opinions about methadone treatment. He has dedicated
his life to helping patients understand that they are entitled to
quality treatment.
