These
preconference sessions will be three consecutive 1-hour presentations
based on topics from Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 43: Medication-Assisted
Treatment for Opioid Addiction in Opioid Treatment Programs.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrations
(SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) produced TIP
43 to provide best-practice guidelines for the treatment and maintenance
of individuals who are dependent on opioids. This TIP provides a
detailed description of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for
opioid addiction in opioid treatment programs. It includes information
on comprehensive treatment, medication maintenance, dosing, assessment,
treatment planning for opioid addiction, and co-occurring medical
and psychiatric conditions.
The three sessions are:
Tips for Counselors: Patients With Medical ProblemsThis
session will be presented by Dr. Martin. Participants who attend
this presentation will be familiar with the medical problems that
are common in people who are addicted to opioids, understand the
treatment of these problems in OTPs, be able to determine when to
refer people to outside services and know the counselors role
in providing supportive care for these patients.
Treating Pregnant Women in Opioid Treatment ProgramsThis
session will be presented by Dr. Kaltenbach. Participants who attend
this presentation will understand the benefits of MAT for pregnant
women who are opioid addicted, be familiar with the symptoms of
opioid dependence in pregnant and postpartum women, and understand
methadone dosing and management for pregnant women and postpartum
mothers receiving MAT.
Updates on Buprenorphine and Methadone Treatment of Opioid AddictionThis
session will be presented by Mr. Jackson. Participants who attend
this presentation will understand the current research on the safety
and effectiveness of MAT and learn about the pharmacology and clinical
use of methadone and buprenorphine.
Copies of TIP 43 will be provided to every participant, and the
TIP will be used as the textbook for all three sessions.
Supported
by the SAMHSA/CSAT.
