On October 10th the Department of Health and Human Services reportedly terminated key staff at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) — a move that threatens critical support for opioid treatment programs nationwide. These sudden cuts are on top of the 10% reduction in SAMHSA’s workforce last spring, which was already leading to delays in patient care and new program approvals.

We need Congress to ACT NOW. Please contact your Members of Congress today and urge them to contact Secretary Kennedy about immediately reversing the SAMHSA staff terminations.

Additionally, there are reports that the Administration is moving forward with plans to consolidate SAMHSA into the new Administration for a Healthy America (AHA) without Congressional approval. SAMHSA plays a vital role in addressing the opioid misuse and overdose epidemic by supporting treatment access, program oversight, and lifesaving community initiatives. Weakening the agency at this moment will harm patients and communities across the country and potentially reverse the recent progress in reducing the rate of fatal overdoses.
