Methadone maintenance treatment has been available for decades; yet many clinicians do not understand how and why it is effective in treating opioid dependence and addiction. The presenters will review the basic elements of opioid agonist treatment; examine the pharmacologic aspects of methadone; present initial screening, admission procedures, and assessment techniques; describe associated medical, psychiatric and substance abuse conditions associated with opioid addiction; evaluate the efficacy of methadone therapy; and review other opioid agonist treatments.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the effectiveness of methadone in treating opioid use disorder; ectiveness of medication assisted treatment in treating opioid use disorder.
  • Discuss the efficacy and safety of methadone; and
  • Identify key bio-psychosocial issues patients may experience during medication assisted treatment.

As supporters of #MedicationAssistedTreatment, we understand the dangers of allowing methadone – a Schedule II narcotic – to be distributed at local pharmacies.
