John Brooklyn, MD

Medical Director
BAART St. Albans and Howard Center Burlington Vermont

Inspired by his professors, Dr. Brooklyn was unafraid of substance use disorders when he began his Family Medicine residency in Vermont. Upon graduation, he worked at the UVM Substance Abuse Treatment Center and at the Community Health Centers of Burlington and has been involved in every buprenorphine research study at that facility since 1992. In 2000, he helped start the nationally recognized Children and Recovering Mothers (CHARM) group to coordinate care of pregnant opioid users and their babies and the promotion of intact families. Dr. Brooklyn helped open Vermont’s first OTP and in 2003 was one of the first physicians nationwide to prescribe buprenorphine. While driving long distances to rural OTPs, he conceived of the game-changing Vermont Hub and Spoke model for integrating opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment into primary care. Dr. Brooklyn has been key in establishing OUD treatment in Vermont prisons, works on technology solutions to expand access to care, and has mentored many in the field.
