Connecting Justice with Treatment – Part 1

June 30, 2021
12:00 PM – 1:30 PM EST
AATOD produced a Justice Initiatives webinar series entitled; “Connecting Justice with Treatment”, which included speakers from two of our closest policymaking partners, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) and the Addiction Policy Forum.
Mark Parrino, AATOD President, introduced the webinar and served as its moderator. Our two guest speakers included:
  • Kathryn Cates-Wessel (CEO/American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry) discussed the Opioid Response Network, which is a SAMHSA funded program including a group of diverse individuals and organizations “working collaboratively to address the opioid and stimulant crisis in this country”. Kathryn will specifically spoke about their justice network, connecting justice representatives and organizations with our treatment community.

  • Jessica Hulsey (CEO/Addiction Policy Forum Founder) discussed the work of the Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN), which is a NIDA funded program, connecting research based intitiatives with treatment and the justice systems. “The Helping to End Addiction Long-termSM Initiative, or NIH HEAL InitiativeSM, will support the Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN) to study approaches to increase high-quality care for people with opioid misuse and OUD in justice settings. JCOIN will test strategies to expand effective treatment and care in partnership with local and state justice systems and community-based treatment providers”.

This webinar brought together two enormously helpful resources and advocates in our field. Our Association is fully supportive of these initiatives since we have targeted increasing access to medication-assisted treatment in correctional settings and other parts of the justice community as one of our leading, long-term policy initiatives.

Like too many New Yorkers, I know what it's like to lose a loved one to addiction—there’s an empty chair at our family table where my nephew, Michael, should be. This is personal for me. Today we’re taking action to combat the opioid epidemic and offer New Yorkers hope. Thread⬇️
