With over 33 states allowing some form of medical cannabis, healthcare professionals must learn about a therapeutic modality for which most have had little training. This workshop will provide credible information about medical cannabis and its use for pain and opioid use disorder. The workshop will provide an overview of the most frequently asked questions, myths and facts about cannabis for medicinal use from a pharmacist who in an expert instructor on the endocannabinoid system, cannabis pharmacology, and clinical considerations. Safety concerns around the lack of standardized labeling, dosing recommendations, and different state policies and dispensing models will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the history cannabis as a controlled substance under U.S. federal law, the changing regulatory and policy landscape, and how healthcare facilities are responding.
  • 2. Explain how medical cannabis legalization is theorized to impact the opioid crisis and how researchers are attempting to measure opioid substitution.
  • 3. Learn about best practices in patient evaluation, monitoring, and risk management considerations, including recognition of potential adverse events, including addiction.
